The Blood Girls
Published in Hardcover by Overlook Press (May, 1999)
Author: Meira Cook
Average review score:

A poetically spun tale of small town Canadian kookiness
If you liked the movie FARGO, well, that probably won't have any bearing on whether you like the Blood Girls. It will however help you gain some understanding as to how odd life can become in the ridiculously small towns that pepper the vast expanse of Northern US and Canada.

The town's denizens are a confusing mix of the painfully placid (spending way too much time waxing reminiscent about the old flour mill or a pot of delicious honeybutter), and religiously zealous (those characters in the book who are the Blood Girls and claim to be affected by stigmata - Jesus' bleeding wounds on the hands and feet). They only thing they all have in common is that they have gone crazy from living in what is the closest equivelant to a modern reincarnation of a Siberian outpost.

Cooke's poetic style (she has had at least 2 books of poetry published so far) makes for a narrative richer than a black forest fudge cake. Even details that others might consider excrutiatingly minute are dressed in their finest prose. This means that the story moves at the pace of maple syrup. But Cooke isn't here to rush you. There is after all no hurry.

This doesn't mean she can't surprise you now and again - and trust me there are a few big ones. In all, if you are a "gentle reader" (as Cooke wants you to be) and are patient, you are in for a potent dose of rural intrigue that may have you thinking twice before you take that next road trip....

Blood on the Wind : The Memoirs of Flying Horse Mollie, a Yampa Ute
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Western Reflections (June, 2001)
Author: Lucile Bogue
Average review score:

An ordinary life in extraordinary circumstances
Blood On The Wind: The Memoirs Of Flying Horse Mollie, A Yampa Ute, is an eye-witness account of the events of 1880 when U.S. Army troops expelled the Yampa Utes from Colorado and compelled them to reside on a Utah reservation. Flying Horse Millie was a teenager at the time and tried to come to terms with the overwhelming forces that seemed designed to drive her people's traditional way of life into extinction. Now in her nineties and with a dozen books and several awards to her credit, author Lucile Bogue's account of Flying Horse Millie, her fears for the future, her disappointments in the adults who failed to protect her, her sadness in the face of loss, and her eventual personal maturity and assumed responsibility for the well-being of her tribe's next generation is an invaluable contribution to Native American studies and a compelling read for anyone who enjoys a riveting memoir of an ordinary life in extraordinary circumstances.

a must read for anyone thinking of safe liposuction
We get information from the patient's point of view. We get the scoup on the latest form of liposuction-tumescent liposuction. This is a book where one can find out what it can be like to have a safe form of liposuction with a relatively quick recovery. Most people are back to work the next day. Also, there have been no deaths when this form of liposuction has been followed. It is worth looking into.

Book of Eldritch Might 2: Songs and Souls of Power
Published in Paperback by White Wolf Publishing Inc. (May, 2002)
Authors: Sword & Sorcery Studios and Monte Cook

Monte Cook does it again
One thing I like about the 3E core rulebooks is it seems like WotC play tested the hell out of them. Nearly everything is fairly well balanced. Many aspects have been simplified from the 2nd addition in a good way (though sometimes too much.) Overall, I really like 3E and consider it worth buying.

Enter supplemental materials like the Book of Eldritch Might II, by Monte Cook. Let's take a look:

VALUE: Under 15 bucks for the printed version, or 5 bucks for the PDF file (available from his website). After shelling out at least 20 for each of the class books, I find this very refreshing.

DESIGN: The art in the printed version is some of the finest yet in a Malhavok product. Monte continues to enlist better and better artists for each product. (I went with the PDF and had Kinko's print it out and spiral bind it.)

CONTENT: This is where all of Monte's D&D 3E material shines. The man is brilliant when it comes to fantasy game design. Like BoEM I, The BoEM II contains new feats, spells (primary for Wizard's and Sorcs), new prestige classes, and new magic items. However, these aren't just more of the same things we've seen. Each has a unique flavor and purpose. However, first lets go over what's totally new: Variant versions of the bard and sorcerer.

BARD: Since 3rd Edition came out, I've seen a million variant rangers, and half a million variant bards. Monte comes through in spades with his variant bard. No longer the sub-par sorcerer rogue fighter, the new bard uses spellsongs to power his unique magical talents. Big thumbs up.

SORCERER: Unlike Monte's variant ranger & bard, his sorcerer is not an attempt to fix a class that was considered 'broken' by so many. Indeed, many consider the sorcerer to kick butt. But, he can get a little boring, casting the same spells all day. This sorcerer really captures the feel of innate, raw magical power. I use Monte's bard, ranger, and sorcerer in my game, and have never looked back.

SOUL MAGIC: A brand new concept for intelligent... spells. A really cool idea that I don't want to spoil. Check it out...

OTHER: Then we have pages of fantastic feats (the lace spell feats rock), spells, prestige classes, and magical items. Like BoEM I, these are all innovative, stylish, and rather deadly. In my campaign I've made the Book of Eldritch Might I & II spells a bit more rare. They are considered powerful secrets to learn of. Once you see some of these spells, you'll see what I mean by powerful...

OVERALL: 5 Stars. One of the few accessories that I've opened up in its entirety to my game. Visit Monte Cook's website for errata to this book, and all his other Malhavok Press products...

Book of Eldritch Might III : The Nexus

Definitely worth a read!
This is a great sourcebook for anyone who plays a spellcaster or runs a game in which spellcsters play a significant role. Each section introduces a new and different way in which magic can be incorporated into a campaign. I plan on using a LOT of the source material in my campaign, and I strongly encourage other game masters to check it out and do the same. It is WELL worth the money.

Boston Cooking School Cook Book: A Reprint of the 1884 Classic
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (October, 1996)
Authors: Mary J. Lincoln, D. A. Lincoln, and Jan Longone
Average review score:

Predesesser to Fanny Farmer's cook book- the "real" orignal
Mary Lincoln founded the Boston Cooking School. Her book contained the lessons and recipies. There are lessons on how to build a fire in a wood stove and explainations of proper diet for the "sick room" as well as a complete discussion on wheat, yeast and bread making. Learn "how a new housewife without near neighbors" can make her own yeast for her breadmaking. This was the first cookbook to use standardized measurements. In addition, the advertisments put an interesting historical perspective on many of our familiar brands. Mary Lincoln hired Fanny Farmer to be the school's principal. Fanny put out a second edition under her own name without any credit to Mary Lincoln....

This CD Set Meets ALL Expectations!
My wife was privileged to work under Pat Moffit Cook and we were thrilled to see Brainwave Symphony on the shelves when it was released. We have heard many CD sets, and none of them have met our expectations until now! If you have sleep problems, I can't recommend this set highly enough! The "Delta" CD worked wonders for our sleep patterns, and I often run the "Beta" CD all day long as I work. It really helps with focus and clarity. I am really looking forward to seeing what is next for Pat Moffit Cook!
